牛は、私たちにとって最も身近な動物の一つでありながら、都市に暮らしていると生で目にする機会はほとんどありません。しかし、世界中のほとんどの人々が、何らかの形で牛のお世話になっているはずです。「牛乳」「牛肉」はもちろんのこと、農耕や運搬など、その貢献は多岐にわたります。
調べれば調べるほど興味深く、そして愛らしい瞳に見入ってしまう——それが牛という生き物です。品種によって異なる「角」「毛並み」「模様」の多様さも、また格別の魅力があります。昨年は北海道にて牛の取材を行いましたが、世界中のさまざまな牛を実際に目で見て確かめたくなるほど、その奥深さに魅了されました。
2023年より始まった新シリーズ「うし」。その第一の難関は、正面からの顔の表現でした。**半立体色彩画（よしかづ画法）**という完全オリジナルの技法であるがゆえに、手本となる作品が存在しません。その壁を乗り越え、試行錯誤の末に生まれたのが、この作品です。「眼」は、まるで生きているかのようにキラキラと輝くよう、細心の注意を払って制作いたしました。ぜひ作品の前でじっくりと目線を合わせ、その瞳の奥に広がる世界をお楽しみください。
そして、この作品の主役ともいえるのが「角」です。牛の角は、神話や伝説の世界でも古くから重要な象徴として登場します。古代ギリシャ・ローマの神話では、神々が牛の角をその力強さと神々しさの証として身につける姿が描かれています。ヒンドゥー教の文化においては、牛の角は聖なる象徴として崇められ、神聖な存在の証とされてきました。時代と文化を超えて、人々の信仰と共に受け継がれてきた「角」の美しさと威厳を、この作品に込めております。
The cow is one of humanity’s most familiar companions — and yet, for those of us who live in cities, it remains a creature rarely seen in person. And yet the debt we owe to cattle is immeasurable: milk, meat, labor in the fields, the carrying of burdens across continents and centuries. Few animals have given more to human civilization, in so many ways.
The deeper one looks into the world of cattle, the more extraordinary it becomes. Every breed carries its own identity — its own pattern of horn, its own texture of coat, its own quiet dignity in the eye. It was during a research trip to Hokkaido last year that KAJIKAWA first fell under their spell — and found himself wanting to travel the world simply to stand before more of them.
From that fascination, the Ushi (Cow) Series was born in 2023.
The greatest technical challenge was the face itself — rendered here in full frontal view. With Semi 3D Yoshikazu Artworks being a completely original technique, no reference or precedent exists to follow. KAJIKAWA worked through trial and error until the solution revealed itself. The eyes were crafted with particular care, built to catch the light and glimmer as if alive. Stand before this work, meet its gaze, and linger there — the depth you find may surprise you.
And then, there are the horns.
Across cultures and across millennia, the horn of the cow has carried sacred weight. In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, gods adorned themselves with horns as symbols of divine power and untamed strength. In Hindu tradition, the cow itself is holy — its horns an emblem of the sacred, revered across generations. From culture to culture, continent to continent, the horn speaks a language older than any written word: one of reverence, of power, of the eternal.
That language lives here, in this work — wound through with flowers and vines, reaching upward, alive.
