Yoshikazu KAJIKAWA

his time, the subject is a lobster.
Crustaceans presented an entirely new challenge. With no reference to follow, Yoshikazu KAJIKAWA began once again from a place of pure interpretation — building something that had never existed before.
A lobster’s body is defined by the layered ridges of its shell. KAJIKAWA worked through each segment with care, shaping the rise and fall of these ridges by hand. The legs and claws were treated the same way — every joint, every curve given its own sense of depth and dimension.
The shell was first painted in matte tones to establish its pattern and form. Over this, several shades of glossy gold were layered in intricate, net-like patterns across the entire body — a technique that brings the shell’s texture and contours vividly to life. Finally, ornamental details were added to complete the piece with striking presence.
The work is rendered primarily in fluorescent pigments. Under natural light, the colors are already vibrant and alive. But under ultraviolet light, the piece transforms entirely — colors ignite and dance like the lights of an illuminated sign at night.
The result is a lobster unlike any other — bold, radiant, and entirely one of a kind.
KAJIKAWA looks forward to exploring new patterns and forms in future lobster works.
Semi 3D Yoshikazu Artworks — Beyond the Limits of Paint
This is painting that becomes sculpture.
Semi 3D Yoshikazu Artworks, a technique developed by Yoshikazu KAJIKAWA, transforms acrylic paint into something far beyond pigment on a surface. Through countless individual strokes, layered one upon another, depth and mass emerge directly from the canvas.
The shell of a beetle or a crab. The fur of a bear or a horse. The delicate folds of a single petal. Each material’s true texture is rendered using nothing but paint itself — not by painting in the traditional sense, but by layering, weaving, carving, and stretching color. It is a challenge that pushes painting beyond its known limits.
What makes this technique irreplaceable is simple: every action is a physical record of the artist’s hand. Hundreds, even thousands of layers are built entirely by Yoshikazu KAJIKAWA himself — each one shaped by a different pressure, speed, rhythm, and weight.
No matter how advanced image generation becomes, it cannot replicate this: the accumulated weight of real material, the trace of time embedded in physical layers built by human hands. Semi 3D Yoshikazu Artworks stands as proof of something only the human hand can create — something digital technology can never reproduce.
The work shifts in expression depending on the angle of view and the way light falls upon it.
This is an invitation — not to look at a screen, but to stand before the work itself, and feel its depth and the time within it, with your own senses.
