2026 is the Year of the Horse. To mark this occasion, I created a zebra once again—something I hadn’t done in quite some time.
Did you know? As striking and stylish as zebras may appear, they actually belong to the donkey family. While horses and donkeys are often distinguished by their ears, the tail is in fact a more reliable indicator. That said, when viewed from a broader biological classification, donkeys and zebras alike are all part of the horse family. Just a small bit of trivia.
For this work, I chose a plaster-like texture to create a soft, gentle atmosphere. The background is rendered in a calm, pastel blue, evoking a sense of quiet comfort and ease. Because the zebra itself is composed primarily in monochrome tones, the contrast with the soft background allows the form to stand out visually.
Even within the white areas of the coat, subtle hues of pale yellow and blue are layered in to give the fur a fuller, more organic presence.
Depending on the angle of the lighting, clear shadows emerge, adding depth and dimensionality to the work. Please enjoy the piece from any angle you like.

2026年は午（ウマ）年です！
これを記念して、久しぶりにシマウマを制作しました。
ご存知でしょうか？
このカッコいいシマウマという生物、実ははロバの仲間なのです。
馬とロバの見分け方は耳で見分けるよりも尻尾でわかります。
しかしながら、ロバもシマウマも大きな分類で見分けると「ウマ」になるそうです。
と、少し「ウンチク」でした。

今回の作品。
柔らかい雰囲気を演出するために、漆喰調にしました。
背景の色彩も安らぎのあるパステル調の水色にしています。
当作品はモノクロの色彩で構成ししているため、柔らかい背景の色彩とのギャップで視覚的にも目立ちます。
白毛の箇所も、薄い黄色や青などで毛並みもふくよかに表現しました。

照明の角度によってしっかりと影も発生します。

2026 is the Year of the Horse! To celebrate this occasion, I returned to a subject I hadn’t explored in some time—the zebra.
Did you know? As striking and cool as zebras may look, they actually belong to the donkey family. While horses and donkeys are often distinguished by their ears, the tail is actually a more reliable clue. That said, when viewed in a broader classification, donkeys and zebras alike are all considered part of the “horse” family. A small bit of trivia—but a fun one.
For this piece, the background is built with dry cracking textures, richly infused with several tones of gold, creating a deep and layered surface. By placing a monochrome animal against a red-and-white palette—pink, in this case—the composition also carries an auspicious, celebratory feeling.
Fluorescent pigments are used throughout the work, allowing it to react under black light and reveal another dimension.

背景はドライなクラッキングに数種の金色をたっぷりと染み込ませました。
そのため、深みがあります。
そして、モノクロの動物を紅白（今回はピンク）にする事で縁起も良いです。
蛍光色を使用しているため、ブラックライトでも反応します。
